At the foot of the spectacular Winnats Pass, high above Castleton, lies the unique Speedwell Cavern.

Visitors leave the daylight world behind, entering through an almost hidden door to descend the 105 steps to the landing stage of an underground canal. This tunnel, an incredible feat of early civil engineering completed with the most primitive hand tools, was driven into the hillside in an eleven year operation which was aimed at meeting the existing lead and fluorospar workings and facilitating the removal of further ore.

At the end of the canal journey explorers are rewarded by the awe inspiring sight of the BottomLess Pit, an underground lake into which miners have hurled over 40,000 tons of spoil without any effect on the water level.
