Details: A Country Lane Delight -an antidote to really bad weather. Here, we feature a seven mile stroll along country lanes, avoiding footpaths (!) but delighting the walker with some lovely views and a great excuse for getting out this week-end. Throw in a very nice country pub or two, a craft centre and tea/coffee stops en route and you have a pleasant 3 hour amble through some of Derbyshire’s loveliest scenery.

Your starting point is the delightful old lead mining hamlet of Sheldon, which you’ll find along the A6 travelling from Bakewell to Buxton. Turn left soon after you’ve passed the right hand turning for Ashford in the Water.

Once in Sheldon, find a suitable parking spot (near the top of the hamlet) and begin the walk by heading down the road keeping the Cock and Pullet pub to your right. Continue out of the village until you reach the junction (turns left to Ashford in the Water) at which turn immediately left, then immediately right ascending a very quiet back lane.

You’ll enjoy some great views as you continue along this lane with Thornbridge Hall and Ashford Hall both to your left as you reach the highest point where Longstone Edge can be seen away in the distance. Continue for a good way until you reach the main Bakewell to Monyash road (passing a minor left turning). Turn right here taking care on this short but busy road section. Walk on for a few hundred metres until you see a sign marked ‘Over Haddon’ where you should turn left to climb the lane that takes you into the aforementioned small village, in which you will find a craft centre, a number of tea/coffee stops and the wonderfully situated Lathkil Hotel.

Continue your walk through the village passing some public toilets on your left before bearing left and lightly ascending the lane that heads outwards towards Haddon Grove and Monyash. After a while you will reach a turn-off for Haddon Grove, which you should ignore before bearing right and up using the lane that carries you eventually to the junction of the main road from Bakewell to Monyash.

Carefully cross the road directly to a track that you should ascend before turning left, presently, at another junction. Slightly more care is required on this section of road which wends its way passed the Ashford turn-off which you should ignore, and onwards eventually to pass the old and ruined lead mine ‘Magpie Mine’ on your right.

In no time at all you’ll round a bend before descending, then ascending to the right hand turn-off signposted Sheldon. Enjoy the peaceful last few hundred meters back to the village before rewarding yourself with a visit to the pub!

OK.... it’s not the same as a walk on the moors and hills, but it beats doing nothing!
