Details: The story of stone and our relationship with it is full of drama, excitement, hardship and beauty. The saga of stone is unfolded at the National Stone Centre.

Stone is the common thread running through the history of Britain - from prehistoric homes at Scara Brae in the Orkneys, axe factories in Cumbria, Suffolk flint mines, stone circles, Hadrian’s Wall, Roman villas, Welsh castles and English cathedrals, Cotswold villages, Wren's London churches, Georgian crescents Victorian engineering masterpieces and today's renaissance of stone buildings.

In a series of fascinating displays and demonstrations the Stone Centre reveals what happens to the 220 million tons of stone quarried each year and the 350 tons used by each of us in our lifetime
