Start this walk in the village of Pilsley near Chatsworth, park carefully and time it so that you have enough time for refreshments in the quirky village pub, The Devonshire.

Head out of the village with the pub on your left, taking the only route that is obviously downhill. Continue on the pavement for a few hundred yards until you reach a clear footpath sign on your left opposite a stone barn. Go straight ahead to a gate stile in the corner of the field. Through this go diagonally down the steep bank to the stream below that runs parallel to the busy road that links Baslow with Bakewell. Cross this road with great care and climb the stile opposite before a short, steep grassy bank is met. At the top of this bank veer slightly right heading to a gate and gap in the wall ahead. Cross the stone stile at the side of the metal gate, head right and then follow the field round to your left.

In a few minutes a stile/footpath sign is reached. Cross this and head down the field to a large and double fronted stone house keeping the single dead tree always to your left. In front of the house is a gate through which you pass to a footpath sign immediately ahead. Turn right here and continue to the lane ahead. Turn left and follow the lane until you reach a footpath sign to your right. Follow this through the field and onwards until you meet the river. Continue on this riverside stroll until you meet a stile/footpath in front of you - just short of a house and the village of Calver. Do not cross this stile but look to your left and follow the footpath sign there eventually passing through a snicket besides a copper beech hedge and out into the village itself and a quiet street.

Turn left here and walk for a few minutes until you reach a clear footpath sign to Bubnell. Follow this into a field and on until you come across two yellow arrows pointing both left and right. Head off to your left and over the stile into a field. Follow the field down the hill and continue straight ahead up the steep wooded bank in front of you, joing an obvious path in a minute or two. At the top take the footpath that is indicated to your (sharpish) right. Do not take the obvious stile in the wall.

This stretch is a delightful stroll with Rhododendrons and bluebells galore depending on the time of year. Continue along this path and on into Bank Wood North before crossing a minor road to reach Bank Wood South (well signposted).
Exiting onto another minor road, this time turn right and follow this very quiet lane and continue until you reach a busier road at which point you should turn left past the Eyre Arms pub. This is Hassop. Continue on and follow the road round to your left (note the very large Catholic Church to your left and Hassop Hall ahead).
At the next bend ahead is a broad farm track with a huge tyre mountain in front of you. Take this track and join a walled lane down to a ford. Cross here and wander up the path into the wood. Continue ahead until you reach the main Baslow to Bakewell road again. Turn right here and 50 yards on take an unsignposted and heavily rutted track to your left across the road. Continue here until a stile and footpath sign is reached on your right. Climb the steep but short bank, over the stile at the top and back into the village of Pilsley.
