Details: Eyam museum tells the story of the development of a community from prehistoric to modern times, including the tragic events of 1665, when the Plague struck and nearly wiped out an entire village...

Eyam village and its museum are ideal for a family day out. The main public car park, with toilet facilities, lies directly opposite the museum, and the museum is therefore a good place to start your visit to Eyam. Children visiting the museum enjoy filling in the 'I-Spy' sheet as they go round.

Aspects of the village's history covered are early life in the village, the tragic epidemic of Bubonic Plague in the middle of the 17th century, it's subsequent social and industrial development, and it's fascinating geology and prehistory.

The entrance lobby covers the early life in the village and describes the geological structure that promoted a supply of water and mineral deposits.

The story of plague begins in the main room, where the nature and beginnigs of the Plague are described in pictures and words. Then the impact on Eyam is covered here and further details and anecdotes of the Eyam Plague are to be found on the first floor.

The second staircase leads back to the ground floor, where you will see a series of displays devoted to the growth and decline of local industries, and the geology of the village is also discussed here. Books, fossil replicas, and samples of rocks and minerals are on sale in the shop.

School parties and group visits
School parties and groups are welcome, and can be accommodated by prior arrangement. Teachers and group leaders are openly invited to make a preparatory visit to the Museum, free of charge.

A lecture room with a seating capacity of about 30 is available for talks, or our video introduction lasting 16 minutes. Parties of more than 30 can be accommodated in the lecture room in successive groups, but as the talk or video are designed to provide an introduction to the displays, we recommend that groups do not go round the Museum beforehand. Talks on the Plague last approximately 30 minutes, and can be tailored to suit individual requirements. When planning your visit, we suggest that you allow about half an hour to go round the Museum.
