Longstone Local History Group wins National Award

Fin Cop project wins British Archaeological Award

Last year’s excavation on the hillfort at Fin Cop near Monsal Dale in Derbyshire has won the 2010 British Archaeological Award for the community archaeological project which best advances the knowledge & practice of archaeology in the United Kingdom.

The award was presented by Judy Cligman a director of the Heritage Lottery Fund which financed the excavation & research in 2009 (also for the current year).

The formal ceremony at the British Museum, London, on the 19 July was exciting and dramatic as the identity of the overall winner was not revealed until a moment before the presentation.

We were both lucky to be there with Ann Hall, project manager & Frank Parker, photographer to represent the very many local people & organisations who had contributed to the success of last year’s research & excavation.

This prestigious national award recognises the detailed organisation & management of the project by Longstone Local History Group and the expert professional supervision by Clive Waddington of Archaeological Research Services.

Most importantly the award is mainly for the really tremendous amount of time and effort spent by young and old throughout our local community.

Well done everyone!
