NEW SERIES: Great Derbyshire pubs and Peak District Inns in superb locations with great views (in no particular order)...
The Barrel Inn at Bretton - the highest pub in the Peak District offers wide-ranging views across to Longstone Moor and (the other way) Kinder Scout. Traditional ales including a monthly changing guest beer (Timmy Taylor's Landlord for instance). Food available 7 days a week at lunch and evening.
Al fresco dining. Occasionally, very al fresco but a real fire inside should sort that out! Four letting rooms available on a b&b basis. Tel: 01433 630856.

Stables Bar at Monsal Head - not really a pub but a converted stable situated at the side of the well known Monsal Head hotel. Traditional beers including a choice of award-winning Thornbridge ales brewed locally in Bakewell. Superb views of the disused railway viaduct in Monsal Dale and up the Wye valley to Upperdale. Great walking country but very popular at weekends so try another day! Free parking behind the hotel. Bar snacks . Open all day every day from noon to around 9pm. Tel: 01629 640250.

The Old Hall Inn at Whitehough - Derbyshire and East Midlands CAMRA pub of the year 2010. Superbly tucked away between Chapel and Whaley Bridge with amazing views of Eccles Pike and Cracken Edge, The Old Hall Inn is a veritable oasis for the discerning drinker and foodie. Sampled only a few days ago (July 2010) we enjoyed a great pint of Marble Ginger and an alfresco lunch on the lawn of the (impossibly attractive) 16th century Inn. Friendly young and enthusiastic team, a real gem and a 'must find' for the Peak District visitor. Beer festival planned for Friday 17th September - over 70 beers and ciders! Rooms available. Food available 7 days a week, lunch and evening. Bar open all day every day. Tel: 01663 750529.

The Lathkil Hotel in Over Haddon near Bakewell - a popular pub/hotel with a well established and deserved reputation (former winner of CAMRA pub of the year) for serving a selection of real ales. Happily the pub also boasts some of the best views in the Peak District and an evening can be whiled away sipping a pint or two whilst enjoying the vista looking over Lathkill Dale (SSSI) and beyond to the village of Youlgrave. Needless to say there's great walking here, it's close to Bakewell but a million miles away from its hustle and bustle. Food served 7 days a week lunch and evenings. Bar open all day Monday-Sat 10.30-11 and from noon all day on Sundays. Rooms available. Tel: 01629 812501 or 01629 814041.
