Christmas in Castleton

...lighting up the Peak District village

Some villages barely make an effort at Christmas. Others opt for a solitary tree and a token row of twinklies. Castleton at any time of year is a special village but every festive season the Peak District village is transformed by its renowned Christmas lights.

Over 40 beautifully decorated Christmas trees are erected across the village – in the market square, along the main street and on Castle Street – which help make Castleton an irresistible Christmas attraction.

Last year’s lights were switched on by Steph Fearon – star of the BBC’s ‘Over The Rainbow’ show and now West End leading lady. The big switch-on - due to take place this year on Saturday November 19th - is usually accompanied by farmers markets, local brass bands, choirs and dancers – as well as Santa in his grotto, of course - and makes for a great way to bring in the festive season.

The lights will be turned on this year by CBeebies favourite Mr Bloom.

Christmas shopping?

A series of special events take place over the period, as well as late-night shopping. Castleton’s array of quirky Victorian gift shops, complete with their gloriously illuminated window displays, suits the season perfectly and you’re sure to find some unique present ideas.

Castleton’s multitude of boutiques and gift shops are full of curious trinkets and knickknacks, many of which are created from unique Blue John stone, found only in Castleton caves.

The late-night shopping licence allows Castleton’s outlets to stay open until 9pm every Thursday, Friday and Saturday during the Yuletide period. And what better way to round off the evening than popping into any of the local hostelries, enjoying a hot mulled wine and washing down those roast chestnuts.

Peak Cavern – or the Devil’s Arse, if you will – plays host to a series of carol concerts, while Treak Cliff Cavern is the scene for several historic candle-lit concerts, maintaining the tradition from Victorian times.

Christmas in Castleton is a special time in a special place that has become a festive fixture for so many. Step into Christmas in Castleton and experience the magic for yourself.

Castleton's Christmas lights will twinkle from November 19th through to January.
