Out and about
At Turlow Bank you are only a step away from delightful walking country and a short walk takes you to Carsington Water where watersports, birdwatching and cycling facilities are available.
We are in a convenient location for all of the attractions the Peak District has to offer such as Chatsworth, Haddon, fine peaks and dales and we are in a good position to visit places of interest to the south of the Peak District whether you seek the tranquillity of Calke Abbey and Sudbury Hall or the excitement of Alton Towers.
Hognaston Village - Turlow Bank is within a few minutes walk of the charming and quiet village of Hognaston which is nowadays well off the beaten track and free of through traffic.
There is a pub, a church, some delightful cottages and little else - ideal for a quiet stroll.
There are numerous interesting villages many of which maintain the local tradition of well dressing. Within an easy drive are villages such as Tideswell with its grand medieval church or Eyam - famous as the Plague Village. Tissington has a uniquely peaceful charm and fine buildings - the list would be endless.
We are 4 miles from the thriving market town of Ashbourne with its shops, antique shops, art galleries, restaurants etc.
Other interesting small towns within easy reach include Buxton, noted for its fine Victorian and Edwardian architecture and a newly re-furbished Opera House offering a full programme of plays and concerts as well as the annual Opera Festival.
Bakewell is a market town of great charm and of course known for the 'Bakewell Pudding'. We will be pleased to offer our advice on places to visit and there are tourist information centres to offer further guidance.
Carsington Water We are within walking distance of Carsington Water which became an instant tourist attraction from its opening. Cycle hire, watersports and fishing are available together with a visitor centre, well made footpaths and bird hides.
There are traffic free trails along former railway lines with cycle hire available and within an easy drive are facilities for many outdoor activities including climbing, caving, hanggliding, rock climbing etc.
Calke Abbey The area has various fine country houses to visit. Calke Abbey is unusual in containing all the collected paraphernalia of centuries of occupation and is kept 'as found'.
Kedleston Hall and Hardwick Hall are splendid National Trust properties. Chatsworth House, home of the Duke of Devonshire, is of course a major attraction as is the more tranquil environment of Haddon Hall.
