More Information
Middleton-by- Wirksworth is just over three miles from Matlock and about one mile from Wirksworth, between the A5012 (Via Gellia) and the B5203. The village is steeped in the history of lead mining and limestone quarrying; Middleton is the site of the only limestone mine in the country. In former years limestone and other minerals were drawn up to the High Peak railway by means of an extremely steep railway, operated by the Middleton Top engine house which has been restored to working order. Middleton Top is a popular access point to the High Peak Trail, popular with walkers and mountain bikers. There is a bicycle hire point at Middleton Top on the Trail.

There are two pubs in the village, both of which serve food, and a shop/post office which sells some locally produced goods. Wirksworth is within reasonable walking distance and boasts an annual Arts festival in September, an assortment of interesting shops, restaurants, a bistro/wine bar, and takeaways.
